Route 66 is one of them. It’s one of the most famous roads in the world, crossing the United States from Chicago to the Pacific coast at Santa Monica, passing through eight states, dozens of small towns and countless diners, motels with neon signs and gas stations from the past. It stretched about 2,400 miles (about 3,900 km), from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California, crossing Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.

In the 1930s, during the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, tens of thousands of families migrated west along it in search of work in California. In his novel “The Grapes of Wrath”, John Steinbeck called it “the Mother Road”, and the name stuck. After World War II the road became a symbol of freedom and the family vacation: Americans set off in new cars, and motels, diners, gas stations and quirky attractions designed to make them stop sprang up along the road.

Then came the Interstates, the freeways. Little by little they bypassed the old road, and whole towns that had lived off it were suddenly left on the sidelines. In 1985 Route 66 was officially decommissioned and removed from the federal highway system. But its story didn’t end there. The road had enough fans who organized and put up brown “Historic Route 66” signs along the way, and in 2006 Pixar’s film “Cars” came out, whose fictional town, Radiator Springs, was inspired by real places along the road.

Important to understand: Today’s Route 66 isn’t one continuous road that you get on in Chicago and off in California. In some places you drive on the original road, sometimes as a narrow frontage road alongside the freeway, and in other places the old alignment has disappeared completely and you have no choice but to get on the freeway. This navigation is part of the adventure, and we’ll talk about it later.

100 Years of Route 66

This article is being written in autumn 2026, the year Route 66 celebrated its 100th anniversary! Throughout the year hundreds of events were held in its honor in all eight states it passes through. The celebrations kicked off in Springfield, Missouri, the city considered the road’s birthplace, and continued with convoys, festivals, classic car parades and exhibitions all along the way.

If you’re reading this article a little after 2026, don’t worry. Some of what was built for the centennial celebrations has stayed along the road: for example, statues placed around Springfield, Missouri, new signs at the entrances to the town of Seligman in Arizona, and a special Route 66 passport in which you collect stamps at sites along the Arizona section. Happily, some of the big events along the road also take place every year, so it’s worth checking whether you’ll be in the area when they happen. The most notable are:

Route 66 Fun Run in Arizona (usually in early May): Hundreds of classic cars drive together on the stretch between Seligman and Topock. It’s the road’s oldest event.

International Route 66 Mother Road Festival in Springfield, Illinois (usually in late September): A big festival of classic cars, music and food in the city center.

Route 66 Fest in Kingman, Arizona (usually in October): Retro-style shows, exhibitions and competitions.

It’s worth checking the exact dates in advance on the websites of the Route 66 associations in each state.

What to Expect on a Route 66 Road Trip

To know whether a drive along Route 66 suits you at all, it’s important to read this section. It’s not the most beautiful or the most comfortable road, and the experience of driving it is based entirely on American nostalgia. So it’s worth adjusting your expectations a little:

The people along the way

A big part of Route 66’s magic is in the people: motel owners who tell the history of the place, souvenir shop sellers who remember the days when the road was a main highway, and other travelers from all over the world, especially from Europe, who’ve come to fulfill a dream. This isn’t a trip to be shy on! Part of the experience is chatting with the people you meet along the way and collecting stories: about the road, about America, and from travelers like you, about other places.

Nostalgia, and neglect too

Alongside lovingly restored places, with glowing neon signs and shiny classic cars, you’ll also come across towns that look almost abandoned, crumbling buildings and gas stations that closed decades ago. Some visitors are disappointed by this, but for others it’s exactly what makes the road so moving: you can see with your own eyes what happened when the main road moved elsewhere.

Navigation is part of the adventure

As part of the drive along Route 66, you’ll have to get off and back on the Interstate, sometimes hit a dead end, and discover that in a certain place there are two different alignments of the same road, from different periods. This can be a bit frustrating, or simply be seen as part of the experience. The secret is to prepare in advance, with a suitable guide (see below).

Kitsch galore

You’ll come across all these attractions on Route 66: a giant blue whale in a pond, Cadillacs half-buried in the ground, a motel where you sleep in a concrete tepee, and wild burros wandering down the main street. The road is full of attractions built in the 1950s and 1960s just to make drivers stop, and most of them still do that very effectively.

Most travelers say they didn’t have enough time on the road

The most common complaint from everyone who’s already driven Route 66 is that they had too much to see in too little time. If you don’t have 3 to 4 weeks, you’ll have to choose between a fast drive with lots of hours at the wheel and focusing on part of the road. And if you have even less time, just plan to drive only a certain part of the road, in the time you have. You’ll find suggestions for worthwhile sections at the end of the article.

Before You Set Off: How to Plan a Route 66 Road Trip

How much time do you need?

To drive the whole road at a comfortable pace, with time to stop, explore and visit the roadside sites, you need about three to four weeks. In two weeks you can do the whole road at a fast pace, with lots of driving hours, or choose two sections and explore them in depth. If you have a week or less, I’d choose one section and combine it with a trip to other places. Later in the article you’ll find suggestions for short sections.

When to go?

The most comfortable seasons are spring and autumn, roughly April to October. You can drive the road in summer, but in the western part, especially in California’s Mojave Desert, temperatures can easily exceed 40 degrees Celsius. In winter, on the other hand, the higher areas of New Mexico and Arizona, such as Flagstaff, can get snow, and some attractions and small businesses are closed or open for limited hours. You’ll find more on matching your trip to the season in our article on traveling in the USA by season.

Which direction to drive?

The classic direction is west, from Chicago to Santa Monica. That’s the direction in which families migrated in the 1930s, and most guides and signs are built around it. There’s also something moving about finishing on the Pacific coast after crossing a whole continent. That said, you can definitely drive in the opposite direction too, for example if flights or car rental are cheaper that way.

Car rental

Because it’s a one-way route, you’ll almost certainly return the car in a different city, and rental companies charge an extra fee for this that can be significant. It’s worth comparing companies and different pickup and drop-off points. If you’re starting in Chicago, there’s no reason to pick up the car before the day you leave the city. All the tips on the subject are in our article on car rental in the USA.

Navigation: Don’t Rely Only on Google Maps

As mentioned, the road was officially decommissioned, so you can’t just type “Route 66” into a navigation app and get the whole route. Google Maps will almost always lead you onto the Interstate, which is faster but also more boring. The guide considered the bible of Route 66 travelers is the EZ66 Guide for Travelers, which details the alignment step by step.

There are also several dedicated Route 66 apps. Route 66 Navigation guides you turn by turn along the historic alignment, works without reception and supports CarPlay. The download is free, but the navigation itself requires a paid subscription, for a week or a year. Route 66 Ultimate Guide is a mostly free app with thousands of points of interest, voice navigation, audio tours and a calendar of events along the road. And if you’re mainly interested in the stories behind the quirky attractions along the way, the Roadside 66 app (iPhone only) is what you’re looking for.

Note: it’s worth downloading the app you choose and its maps before you set off, because some remote stretches have no reception.

For a list of more useful apps for a trip to the USA click here.

Important Tips for Driving Route 66

Fill up when you can, not when you need to: On some sections, especially in California’s Mojave Desert, there are long distances without gas stations or services. So make the most of every opportunity, because there may not be another one soon. Another thing worth knowing: at most stations the pump asks for a US ZIP code when you pay by credit card, and with a non-US card this usually doesn’t work. The solution is to go inside to the cashier and ask them to charge a set amount before you fill up.

Check opening hours in advance: Many of the diners, shops and small museums along the road are family businesses. Some are open only on certain days of the week, and some close in winter. If there’s a place that matters to you in particular, make sure it’s open on the day and at the time you plan to arrive.

Not all of Route 66 is paved: Some of the old alignments are dirt roads or narrow, rough roads. Many car rental companies prohibit driving on unpaved roads, so check conditions in advance and skip those sections if necessary.

The drive takes longer than it looks on the map: On the historic alignment speeds are lower, you pass through towns, and you stop a lot, because that’s what you came for. So don’t plan days with too many miles.

Watch the clock in Arizona: Arizona doesn’t observe daylight saving time, except in the Navajo Nation. So in summer the time there is the same as in California, and in winter the same as in New Mexico. This is especially important when booking tours or planning to reach a site before closing time.

Where to sleep?

One of the most interesting experiences on a drive along Route 66 is staying in its historic motels. These are restored buildings from the 1930s to the 1950s, with neon signs, parking in front of the door and an old-time atmosphere. Besides the iconic motels, which we’ll detail below, there are lots of simple motels and roadside hotels along the road, and you can definitely be spontaneous and book a night a day or two ahead each time, according to your pace. The famous motels, however, are worth booking well in advance, because they have few rooms and are in high demand. You’ll find more on staying in motels inthe complete guide to motels in the USA.

The Route by State: What to See Along Route 66

Illinois: Setting Off

For most travelers, the Route 66 journey begins inChicago, and in my opinion it’s worth devoting at least two or three days to the city before picking up the car. One of the most popular activities in Chicago is the architecture river cruise, which is the best way to understand why the city is famous for its skyscrapers.

The official starting point of Route 66 is the “Begin Route 66” sign on Adams Street in downtown Chicago, right next to the Art Institute. The tradition is to have breakfast before setting off at Lou Mitchell’s, a long-established diner that has served breakfast to Route 66 travelers since the 1920s!

And to help you find somewhere to stay while you’re in the city, here are our recommended hotels in Chicago.

After leaving Chicago, the scenery quickly changes to cornfields and small towns. In Wilmington stands the Gemini Giant, a huge fiberglass statue of a green astronaut holding a rocket. It’s one of the Muffler Men, giant statues made in the 1960s and placed outside businesses along the highways to make drivers stop. And it’s only the first: you’ll meet several more along Route 66. In Pontiac there’s the Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum, with a large collection of memorabilia and murals around the town. In Springfield, the capital of Illinois, you can combine a visit to sites connected with Abraham Lincoln with a stop at the Cozy Dog Drive In, which claims to have invented the corn dog: a hot dog on a stick in a fried cornmeal batter. It’s been served here for decades and is called the Cozy Dog.

Just before crossing into Missouri, it’s worth stopping at the Chain of Rocks Bridge over the Mississippi River. It’s an old bridge with a strange bend in the middle, open today only to pedestrians and cyclists.

Missouri: The Arch, the Caverns and the Birthplace of the Road

St. Louis, Missouri, welcomes you with the Gateway Arch, a 192-meter stainless steel arch on the bank of the Mississippi. It’s recommended to go up to the observation deck at the top of the arch, but note that you ride up in small, slightly claustrophobic trams. If you’re not afraid of enclosed spaces, it’s a recommended experience, because the view from the top is amazing! After visiting the arch, which also includes an interesting museum on the history of St. Louis as the gateway to the West, local tradition demands a stop at Ted Drewes, a frozen custard stand that has operated on the road since the 1940s. Try the Concrete, a custard so thick they turn the cup upside down and nothing spills!

Continue west to Meramec Caverns, a large cave system open to visitors since the 1930s, with impressive halls of stalactites and a legend that the outlaw Jesse James hid in them. You’ll get to know the caverns even before you reach them, thanks to signs the owner put up many years ago, with the caverns’ name painted on barn roofs along the road. Some of these signs are still visible today. From there continue to the small town of Cuba. Its murals have turned it into an open-air museum, and the old Wagon Wheel Motel has been operating there for decades.

The next big stop is Springfield, where in 1926 the telegram that gave the road its name was sent, which is why it’s called the birthplace of Route 66. Here you can also look for the centennial statues placed around the city. And before leaving the state, it’s worth stopping in Carthage to take a look at the Boots Court Motel, one of the best-preserved roadside motels on the road.

Kansas: 13 Miles of Surprises

Only about 13 miles (about 21 km) of Route 66 pass through Kansas, but don’t skip them. In the town of Galena you’ll find Cars on the Route, a restored gas station with the rusty tow truck that inspired the character of Mater the tow truck in “Cars”. From there continue to Baxter Springs, a small town with a restored historic gas station, and on into Oklahoma.

Oklahoma: The Longest Stretch

The longest stretch of Route 66 passes through Oklahoma, and many sections of the original road have been preserved there. One of the most popular stops is the Blue Whale of Catoosa: a huge, smiling concrete whale built in the 1970s on the edge of a small pond as an anniversary present. In Tulsa, which is called the “Capital of Route 66” because Cyrus Avery, the man considered the father of the road, lived there, it’s worth driving the historic stretch along 11th Street and seeing the restored neon signs.

In Arcadia a giant illuminated soda bottle stands outside Pops, a restaurant and shop with hundreds of kinds of soft drinks from all over the world. Right next to it is a historic round barn that has become a symbol of the road. After Oklahoma City, the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum in Clinton is one of the best museums along the whole route, telling the story of the road decade by decade.

Texas: Cadillacs, Steaks and the Halfway Point

The Texas section passes through the Panhandle, the flat northern part of the state. In Shamrock stands the U-Drop Inn, an Art Deco gas station and café that inspired one of the buildings in “Cars”. Two famous attractions await in Amarillo. The first is Cadillac Ranch: ten Cadillacs stuck nose-down in the ground in an open field, covered in layer upon layer of graffiti. The idea is to bring a spray can and add your own graffiti! The second is The Big Texan, a huge steakhouse where anyone who manages to finish a 72-ounce steak (about two kilos), including sides, within an hour eats for free!

Just before the border with New Mexico is the town of Adrian, the halfway point of Route 66: 1,139 miles (1,833 km) in each direction. Take a photo by the sign and go into the MidPoint Cafe for a slice of “Ugly Crust Pie”, the pie with the ugly crust that’s far more famous than the pretty one. It’s a small business with limited opening hours, so check in advance when it’s open.

New Mexico: A Different Landscape and Plenty of Neon

Here the green plains give way to an arid, reddish landscape. In Tucumcari it’s worth waiting for sunset, when the signs of the Blue Swallow Motel and the businesses along the main street light up. It’s one of the most Instagrammable places on the road! Continue to Santa Rosa, home of the Blue Hole, a natural sinkhole with clear blue water you can swim in.

Here you have to choose: the original alignment, which climbs north to Santa Fe, or the newer alignment, which continues straight to Albuquerque. If you have time, it’s worth taking the detour via Santa Fe. Later in the article you’ll find what’s worth doing there.

In Albuquerque the road runs along Central Avenue, with neon signs and old motels. The scenery is spectacular, and this is where the longest continuous stretch of the original road is.

Right after the border is Petrified Forest National Park, which combines a colorful desert, with hills striped in red, purple and gray, with the remains of petrified trees more than 200 million years old that have turned into colorful stone. It’s also the only national park Route 66 ran through, and there’s a spot marking the old road’s alignment, next to an old car.

In Holbrook you can stay at the Wigwam Motel, whose rooms are designed as tepees, and of course photograph it even if you don’t stay there. In Winslow is one of music lovers’ favorite spots: Standin’ on the Corner Park, a small park on a street corner created in honor of the Eagles’ song “Take It Easy”, which mentions the town. On the corner stand a statue of a guy with a guitar and a statue of Glenn Frey from the band, and on the wall behind them is a mural based on the song. Not far from there is Meteor Crater, a huge pit more than a kilometer across, created by a meteorite impact about 50,000 years ago. It’s privately owned and entry is paid, but it’s one of the only places in the world where you can see such a well-preserved crater.

Flagstaff, a pleasant mountain town at an altitude of more than 2,000 meters, is a good base for a night or two. From here, and from the town of Williams after it, you set off for the Grand Canyon, which we’ll cover below. After Williams you reach Seligman, the town where the road’s preservation movement began in the late 1980s. Its main street is full of souvenir shops, neon signs and old cars, some of them styled like the characters from “Cars”. Mannequins in strange costumes sit on the roofs and shopfronts, Elvis among them. Some find the town charming and some less so, but either way it’s a living museum of the road.

From there you drive the longest continuous stretch of the historic road, past the Hackberry General Store, which looks as if it’s been plastered entirely with rusty signs, to Kingman, home of the Arizona Route 66 Museum. The last section in Arizona is one of the most dramatic on the whole route: a narrow, winding road that climbs to Sitgreaves Pass and descends to the former mining town of Oatman. Wild burros, descendants of the burros that worked in the mines, wander its main street and ask tourists for food. If you don’t like narrow roads without guardrails, consider the bypass.

California: The Desert, Then the Ocean

After crossing the Colorado River you reach California and the Mojave Desert. In Amboy stands the famous sign of Roy’s Motel & Cafe, one of the most photographed symbols of the road, in a completely empty desert landscape. Note that sections of the historic road in the Mojave have been closed in the past because of flood damage, so check the road’s condition before setting off.

In Newberry Springs is the Bagdad Cafe, made famous by the film of the same name. Near Oro Grande is the Bottle Tree Ranch, a forest of metal poles hung with hundreds of colorful glass bottles that make sounds in the wind. Continue through San Bernardino, home to another Wigwam Motel, and through Pasadena, and eventually you reachLos Angeles.

The symbolic finishing point is the “End of the Trail” sign on the Santa Monica Pier. From there you can stroll along Canyon Road, lined with dozens of art galleries, and visit the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, dedicated to the painter who fell in love with New Mexico’s landscapes.
