But what makes a visit even more rewarding is actually what lies outside it: once you’ve seen the city, you can head out on a range of fascinating day trips in the surrounding area, some of them even in a neighboring country! Between one and four hours’ drive from Sofia you’ll find historic cities, ancient monasteries, glacial lakes, crazy rock formations and much more. How do you choose? In this article we’ve gathered all the most recommended day trips from Sofia, with all the important details you need to pick the trip that’s tailor-made for you.

How Do You Decide Whether You Have Time for a Day Trip from Sofia?

You can see central Sofia in two or three days, so if you’re staying in the city for 4 days or more, it’s definitely worth devoting at least one day to a trip outside it. And if you only have time for one trip, I’d recommend Rila Monastery, which is the most famous attraction in Bulgaria!

How Do You Take a Day Trip from Sofia?

There are two main ways to take day trips from Sofia:

Independent trip: by rental car or by public transport (available to some of the destinations).

Guided trip: an organized tour that leaves from Sofia with transport, and usually with an English-speaking guide too. Many tours include pickup from your hotel or from a central meeting point in the city.

If you’ve chosen to travel by car, book it in advance and you’ll save yourself the hassle of comparing prices and looking for a reliable rental agency during your trip. Note that intercity roads in Bulgaria require an electronic vignette (road toll), so make sure with the rental company that it’s included with the car.

Recommended Day Trips from Sofia

Sofia sits almost in the heart of the Balkans, which makes it an excellent base for trips. To the south are the Rila Mountains with the famous monastery and the glacial lakes, to the east the historic cities of Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo await, to the north there are impressive rocks and caves, and to the west you can cross the border into Serbia or North Macedonia. Here are all our recommendations:

Rila Monastery: The Most Popular Trip from Sofia

If there’s one day trip that almost every visitor to Sofia takes, it’s the trip to Rila Monastery. The monastery was founded in the 10th century by the hermit Ivan of Rila (Bulgaria’s patron saint), and it’s the largest and most important Orthodox monastery in the country and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It sits in a green valley in the heart of the Rila Mountains, and the sight of the inner courtyard with its striped arches, wooden balconies and the main church covered in colorful frescoes is simply breathtaking. Inside the church you can see the gilded iconostasis (the wall of icons separating the worshippers from the altar) and the colorful frescoes, whose creators included Zahari Zograf, one of the greatest artists of the Bulgarian National Revival.

Other sites worth visiting around the monastery are Boyana Church and St. Ivan’s Cave. Boyana Church is a small, modest church at the foot of Mount Vitosha, on the outskirts of Sofia, but don’t let its size fool you: it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to the 13th-century frescoes that decorate it, considered among the most important medieval works of art in Eastern Europe. The paintings are surprisingly realistic, especially the portraits of the couple who funded the church, who look almost like real people. St. Ivan’s Cave is about 4 km from the monastery, and it’s where Ivan of Rila lived as a hermit and where he was also buried. You reach it on a short, pleasant walk through the forest, and according to tradition, anyone who manages to crawl through the narrow opening in the cave is cleansed of their sins. So if you’re feeling fit (spiritually and physically), now’s the time to find out.

Getting there?

By car: the monastery is about 120 km south of Sofia, and the drive takes about two hours.

By public transport: there used to be a daily bus from Ovcha Kupel station in Sofia, but in recent years the line hasn’t run regularly. So if you don’t have a car, the most convenient way to get there is on a guided tour.

Guided tour: this is the most popular guided tour from Sofia! Its advantage is that it’s built like a package you can put together according to your preferences and the time you have: the base is a visit to Rila Monastery, and you can add entry to the old Boyana Church, a short walk through the forest to St. Ivan’s Cave, or both. Some options also stop at the Monument of the Bells, a park on the edge of Sofia with dozens of bells donated by countries from all over the world, set up in 1979 for the International Year of the Child. You can also choose between a live guide and an audio guide in an app, and between a meeting point in the city center and pickup from set points. Note: if you want to go inside Boyana Church, choose an option that includes entry, because some options only stop in its garden.

Click here for details and bookings.

The Seven Rila Lakes: The Most Beautiful View in Bulgaria

The Seven Rila Lakes are a group of glacial lakes spread at altitudes of 2,100 to 2,500 meters, one above the other, in the heart of Rila National Park. Each lake has its own name, based on its shape, such as “the Kidney”, “the Eye” and “the Tear”, and the view from above, when you see them all cascading down the mountain, is for many people the most beautiful view in Bulgaria. It’s a trip that involves walking, so if you’re after pleasant weather and a good view of the lakes, the best season is mid-June to mid-September. In winter and spring the lakes are covered in ice and snow and you can’t see them, so if you come in that season, know that you’ll get a white landscape rather than blue lakes. And in any season, bear in mind that mountain weather changes quickly, and on very windy days the chairlift to the start of the trail may not run.

Getting there?

By car: drive about an hour and a half to two hours from Sofia to the Panichishte area, and from there take the chairlift up to the Rila Lakes Hut. From the hut you start walking between the lakes. It’s a trip you can definitely do on your own, but you need to set off early in the morning.

Guided tour: if you don’t have a car or you’d rather someone else took care of the logistics, there are several excellent options:

Guided trek to the Seven Lakes: a full day devoted entirely to hiking in the mountains, in a small group with a professional guide. The trip requires the fitness to walk for about 5 hours, and what you’ll see changes from season to season: snow in winter, sparkling lakes in summer. Note that sometimes the chairlift doesn’t run, and then you’ll need to add about two more hours of walking! So pay attention to the details when booking.

Click here for details and bookings.

The Seven Lakes and Rila Monastery: if you want to kill two birds with one stone, you can join this trip, which takes you to Panichishte and gives you about 6 hours of free time to walk among the lakes at your own pace, stopping at Rila Monastery on the way back. It suits travelers who prefer to be independent but need transport to the lakes and the monastery.

Click here for details and bookings.

And if you’d rather soak in thermal pools after the guided trek to the lakes, join this tour (choose the option with the pools rather than the monastery visit).

Plovdiv: One of the Oldest Cities in Europe

Plovdiv is the second-largest city in Bulgaria and is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. In 2019 it was chosen as European Capital of Culture, and rightly so. In the old town you’ll find colorful houses from the Bulgarian National Revival period, cobbled streets and a beautiful view from Nebet Tepe hill. There’s also an impressive Roman theater that’s still used for performances, the remains of a Roman stadium right under the main pedestrian street, and the Kapana district, the city’s wonderful creative quarter, with galleries, bars and cafés.

Getting there?

By public transport: this is one of the easiest day trips from Sofia to do on your own. There are buses from Sofia’s central bus station to Plovdiv several times a day, and the ride takes about two hours. There’s also a train, but it’s slower.

By car: the drive on the highway takes about two hours. The advantage of a car is that you can also combine Asen’s Fortress and Bachkovo Monastery, which are about half an hour from Plovdiv. We did this as part of our Bulgaria itinerary with a rental car.

Guided tour: there are several organized tours from Sofia to Plovdiv, with or without extras:

Plovdiv only: the tour includes transport and a guided tour of the old town, followed by free time for lunch and wandering around. You can also choose a transport-only option and explore the city independently.

Click here for details and bookings.

Plovdiv and Koprivshtitsa or Starosel: a trip that, after Plovdiv, continues on one of two routes, depending on the day you book. On one route you visit Koprivshtitsa, a picturesque town in the Sredna Gora mountains that looks like a living museum, with colorful Revival-era houses. On the other you visit Starosel, home to the largest underground Thracian temple in the Balkans (the Thracians were an ancient people who lived in the region before the Romans), and continue to the village of Staro Zhelezare, whose house walls are decorated with paintings of the villagers alongside famous figures from around the world. If reaching a particular destination matters to you, check before booking which route runs on your date.

Click here for details and bookings.

Plovdiv, Asen’s Fortress and Bachkovo Monastery: on this trip you visit Plovdiv and then continue into the Rhodope Mountains, to Asen’s Fortress, which sits on an almost vertical cliff with a stunning view of the valley. Finally, you drive to Bachkovo Monastery, founded in 1083, the second-largest monastery in Bulgaria after Rila Monastery. The monastery holds an icon of the Virgin Mary to which believers attribute miraculous powers, and to this day pilgrims come to it from all over Bulgaria.

Click here for details and bookings.

Veliko Tarnovo: Bulgaria’s Medieval Capital

Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire between the 12th and 14th centuries, and today many consider it the most beautiful city in Bulgaria. The city is built on hills above the winding Yantra River, and its houses look as if they’re spilling down the cliffs. The highlight is Tsarevets Fortress, where the remains of the royal palace have been preserved, and you can climb Baldwin’s Tower for a spectacular view. From there it’s worth wandering along the old craftsmen’s street, Samovodska Charshiya, and seeing the Asenevtsi Monument. Close to the city is the village of Arbanasi, which in the 17th and 18th centuries was a village of wealthy merchants. Its merchants’ houses are built like small fortresses, with high stone walls and a fortified ground floor, and inside they hide beautifully decorated rooms with carved wooden ceilings. Don’t miss the Church of the Nativity either, which looks modest from the outside, but inside every wall is covered in frescoes.

Getting there?

By car or public transport: Veliko Tarnovo is about three hours’ drive from Sofia, so it’s a very long day of travel. If you’re traveling independently, I’d recommend staying in Veliko Tarnovo for at least one night rather than returning to Sofia the same day.

Guided tour: if you still want to see Veliko Tarnovo in one day from Sofia, an organized tour will save you the long drive. The tour takes about 12 hours and includes an English-speaking guide throughout the day. Note that entry fees to the sites aren’t included.

Click here for details and bookings.

The Belogradchik Rocks and the Caves of Northern Bulgaria

Northern Bulgaria has some of the most surprising landscapes in the country. In the northwest, two and a half to three hours’ drive from Sofia, are the Belogradchik Rocks, giant formations of reddish sandstone, each with its own name and legend, based on the figure it resembles. In 2009 they were nominated for the New Seven Wonders of Nature. Built among the rocks is Belogradchik Fortress, which dates back to Roman times, and from its walls there’s an amazing view of the rock formations.

Getting there?

By car: the easiest way to get there on your own is by car, because by public transport the journey is complicated and long.

Guided tour: the tour includes a visit to the rocks and the fortress, and from there continues to Venetsa Cave, one of the most beautiful caves in Bulgaria, lit with colorful lighting.

Click here for details and bookings.

And if you love caves, there’s also a day trip devoted entirely to caves, to three impressive caves in the Lovech area of northern Bulgaria: Saeva Dupka Cave with its passages and stalactites, Prohodna Cave, nicknamed “the Eyes of God” because of two huge openings in its ceiling, and the huge Devetashka Cave near Lovech, which has also served as a set for Hollywood productions.

Click here for details and bookings.

Skopje and Niš: Crossing the Border

One of Sofia’s advantages is how close it is to several borders, so you can add another country to your trip, even for just one day. When you leave the hotel, don’t forget your passport, because North Macedonia and Serbia aren’t part of the European Union, and there are passport checks at the border crossing. And if you’re using an eSIM, make sure your plan also covers these countries.

A trip to Skopje, North Macedonia: the capital of North Macedonia is an interesting mix of an old Ottoman city and a new city full of huge statues and neoclassical buildings. You can join an organized tour that visits the city’s fortress, the Church of the Holy Savior, the Old Bazaar and the square with the statue of Alexander the Great.

Click here for details and bookings.

If you have more time, it’s worth devoting a few days to Skopje. On the organized tour of the city you first visit the Skull Tower, a chilling monument the Ottomans built from the skulls of Serbian rebels killed in battle in 1809. From there you continue to the Mediana site, with the remains of a Roman villa and mosaic floors from the time of Constantine, the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity, who was born in Niš. You also visit the Red Cross concentration camp, built by the Germans in Niš during World War II, where Serbs, Jews and Roma were held and murdered. Today the site is a museum in memory of the victims. In addition, you visit Niš Fortress, built in the 18th century on Roman foundations. And at the end of the day there’s free time to taste the famous Serbian grill, especially ćevapi (small kebabs) and pljeskavica (a Serbian burger).

Click here for details and bookings.

Don’t Have a Whole Day? Pop Up to Mount Vitosha and the Boyana Waterfall

You don’t have to travel far to get out into nature. Mount Vitosha rises right above Sofia, and you can see it from the end of Vitosha Boulevard. When I was in Sofia I joined a tip-based walking tour of the mountain: you take a taxi to Boyana Church, climb for about two hours on a forest trail to the Boyana Waterfall, and return via a beautiful viewpoint over the city and Boyana Lake. You’ll find all the details about the tour in my article on tours in and around Sofia (these days the tour must be booked in advance).

We wish you a wonderful trip to Sofia and its surroundings. And we invite you to tell us in the comments how it went.

Planning a Trip to Sofia?

We have lots more recommendations on the site:

Sofia: The Travel Guide to the Bulgarian Capital

Where to Stay in Sofia: Recommended Hotels in the City Center

Recommended Hotels in Sofia

Itinerary: 48 Hours in Sofia

Plovdiv: The City Travel Guide

A Bulgaria Itinerary with a Rental Car: 10 Days Among Green Mountains and Picturesque Villages

Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, is a charming city, with impressive churches, Roman remains in the heart of the city and excellent cafés.
