I got back from Lisbon in the early hours, Portugal<\/a>, and the truth? My body is here, but my head is still entirely on the beaches, the places and the people of Lisbon and Portugal in general. I traveled independently from April 9 to 15. Here’s a summary of my travel journal (a detailed one, I must say) of the trip. I hope it helps some of you.<\/p>\n\n

Day 1<\/h2>\n\n

Landed at 14:00 and got to my Airbnb apartment in Amadora, about 25 minutes from the airport. I chose it mainly for its location, central to the places and sites I wanted to visit: about 30 minutes from Cascais and about 50 minutes from Sesimbra.<\/p>\n\n

I drove to one of the most recommended spots, about 20 minutes away: LX Factory, an area with restaurants, pubs, stalls selling unique clothing and quite a few live shows right at the doors of the businesses. A fun, young atmosphere buzzing with people and music.<\/p>\n\n

Right after that, a visit to Casino Lisboa, one of the best and most inviting in Europe.<\/p>\n\n

Tip from the Check In\/Out team:<\/strong> Booking a rental car in advance is recommended and saves you the hassle of comparing prices and looking for a reliable rental agency during your trip. Day 2<\/h2>\n\n

A fairly early start and off to Cipreia Dive Club in Sesimbra, a long-established, top-quality dive club. Dive prices are relatively high, but the standards definitely justify it.<\/p>\n\n

From there, a hike to the cliffs of Cabo Espichel near Arr\u00e1bida, on a trail that ends at dinosaur footprints. For experienced hikers only.<\/p>\n\n

From there, back to the apartment and a ride to Bairro Alto, a lively area mainly for the young and the young at heart, with pubs, bars and restaurants on every corner, busy and crowded even in the off season. I ate at a burger place called Cultura do Hamb\u00farguer, definitely recommended for lovers of indulgent meals. Keep in mind that Bairro Alto, like all of Lisbon, is full of ups and downs. After a satisfying meal, I went on to a jazz concert at O Bom O Mau e O Vil\u00e3o. “Concert” is a big word: it was 5 musicians playing live, with an amazing atmosphere, a well-designed venue and definitely good bar prices. One of the places I enjoyed most.<\/p>\n\n

Day 3<\/h2>\n\n

Off to Praia de S\u00e3o Juli\u00e3o for top rope rock climbing with a local company. The beach is stunning, and the views from up high, and really from every angle, are simply breathtaking.<\/p>\n\n

The activity was relatively cheap and took about 3 hours. Recommended for nature and thrill lovers.<\/p>\n\n

From there, a ride to Chiado, with Eden Tisson<\/a>, the beating heart of Lisbon: an area with upscale and less upscale shopping centers (there’s an avenue that really reminds you of the Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es), theaters, squares, ornate and impressive churches and many statues.<\/p>\n\n

Also, Landeau Chocolate serves one of the tastiest chocolate cakes in the world, at least according to the NY Times. In my opinion it’s a tasty cake, but my mom’s is better.<\/p>\n\n

And the area also has a bookstore called Bertrand, which has been selling books since 1732. Guinness World Records declared it the oldest operating bookstore in the world.<\/p>\n\n

After going back to the apartment, I went out again to Bairro Alto, to a nice pub called Groove Bar, with a fun vibe, not too crowded and great service, and from there to a non-touristy and, it must be said, rather dark jazz pub called Desterro.<\/p>\n\n

Day 4<\/h2>\n\n

Off to a bike rental shop called Fitbike and a ride to a stunning beach called Praia da Rocha. In season the beach is probably crowded, but since I came on a weekday, and it wasn’t the season, there were about 30 people on the whole stretch of beach. Quiet, clean and wild.<\/p>\n\n

Worth noting: the bike ride is especially challenging, both because of the distance and because of the ups and downs.<\/p>\n\n

After resting up at the apartment, I went out in the evening to Tokyo Lisboa, a dance bar by the river. That evening they were playing jazz, and the place was fairly crowded but had a good, fun atmosphere. From there, within walking distance, to Lisboa Rio, an excellent electronic party, I must say.<\/p>\n\n

Day 5<\/h2>\n\n

Breakfast at a local caf\u00e9 and a break from the intense holiday. In the evening, a ride to Baixa, a bustling tourist area full of good things, from mesmerizing architecture and the national art museum, through impressive squares and statues, to traditional restaurants.<\/p>\n\n

Day 6<\/h2>\n\n

Off to Praia da Giribita, a wild, private stretch of beach. Getting to the beach takes some courage, since the way down is a steep, challenging cliff (it helps to use the rope put up by kind-hearted locals), but getting there is so worth it: a private stretch of beach! I was on the beach with 2 surfers, a book, speakers and beer. An amazing experience.<\/p>\n\n

From there, a local caf\u00e9, a very local one, with no English menu or people who understand English. A warm, pleasant place with excellent coffee.<\/p>\n\n

From there, a ride to Simple Coffee and Bread, a place with no tourists at all. Here too the menu is in Portuguese and the pace is easygoing, with excellent food at good prices.<\/p>\n\n

Back to the apartment and a ride to the Pra\u00e7a do Imp\u00e9rio Garden, an impressive, well-kept urban park, perfect for a relaxed walk with headphones, and then to a colorful local bar playing electronic techno and serving unique cocktails, called Machimbombo.<\/p>\n\n

Day 7<\/h2>\n\n

A drive to a lovely viewpoint, Miradouro de S\u00e3o Pedro de Alc\u00e2ntara, over the city and the river, and breakfast at Mercado da Ribeira, a food hall with quick but high-quality and fairly expensive food. And as a final act, a visit to Lisbon’s Navy Museum, full of knowledge and especially impressive exhibits, with a meticulous account of the history and the astronomy bound up with the Portuguese people. From there, a walk to the Lisbon Planetarium, a spectacular show of the heavens, explaining the sky map and the history of astronomy. Especially recommended for science lovers. Book your ticket in advance and make sure the show is in English.<\/p>\n\n
