The water temperature is fairly constant thanks to the warm currents that pass near the islands. Most visitors come in summer and early autumn, but you can definitely visit in the other seasons too, including winter, which isn&#8217;t particularly cold (an average of 17\u00b0C \/ 63\u00b0F).<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Food, Drink and a Subtropical Island<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Food and drink on a subtropical island is a celebration of flavors. The island is known for its traditional cuisine and for wines made entirely on the island.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Madeira Wine<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Madeira wine is one of the best-known wines in Europe. It&#8217;s made from sweet grape varieties using a special process (which includes adding alcohol, as with port wine) so it can be preserved for a long time (mainly for shipping it off the island, which in past centuries was a long, complicated journey).<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Local Drinks<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alongside the wine you&#8217;ll also find cherry liqueur, locally brewed beer and poncha, a drink made from sugar-cane spirit with honey and lemon.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Food<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The island is proud of its special bread, bolo do caco, a round flatbread traditionally cooked on a basalt stone. It&#8217;s usually served with garlic butter and goes well with another traditional dish, the famous tomato and onion soup<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cake lovers should try bolo de mel, a special cake whose main ingredients are sugar-cane honey, fruit and almonds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Like any island, Madeira has a variety of seafood and fish. Try the tuna caught off Madeira&#8217;s coast and the black scabbardfish (espada preta), a deep-sea fish with white flesh.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All over the island, in towns and villages, you&#8217;ll find food stalls and lively markets selling all kinds of dishes and seafood, as well as espetada: skewers of beef in a special marinade, grilled over an open flame. \u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to See and Do in Madeira<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Festivals<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several festivals take place on the island throughout the year and add to the experience (check the exact dates of each festival in advance).<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In February (as in other places in Portugal), Carnival is celebrated (similar to the one in Brazil), with costumes, musical parades, colorful participants and, above all, lots of joy and good spirits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In March you can join a festival celebrating the island&#8217;s fruit and the dishes made from it.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In April you&#8217;ll find yourself at the Flower Festival, which goes hand in hand with the island&#8217;s subtropical vegetation and amazing blooms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In early September (sometimes late August) there&#8217;s the Wine Festival, with plenty of wine. It coincides with the celebrations marking the grape harvest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Laurisilva Forest<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This laurel forest has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has preserved ancient vegetation, especially a particular type of laurel tree that grows in only a handful of islands in the world. The forest is also full of countless plants, flowers and shrubs in all colors and sizes, which make it feel like a magical garden out of a movie.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Levadas<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name levada comes from the verb levar, which means &#8220;to carry&#8221;. It&#8217;s the name of the old technique, dating from the 16th or 17th century, of digging channels to carry water from the mountaintops to the crops below. You can walk along the channels, which open up many views along the way.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along these levadas there are walking paths and wild nature trails. Difficulty varies from trail to trail, and there are more than 200 levada trails across the island!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Old Town (Funchal)<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The capital is more than 500 years old and offers an encounter with the past. Wander the cobbled alleys, and also see the city from the cable car that glides above it up to the village of Monte (about 4 km).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the capital you&#8217;ll also find an interesting wine museum, a museum dedicated to football star Ronaldo and an interesting tropical botanical garden (Jardim Bot\u00e2nico) with streams, trees and, above all, a huge variety of flowers.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Toboggan Ride (Carreiros do Monte)<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s not every day you get to ride a sled down a road, so it&#8217;s fun to discover that the island offers a unique toboggan ride on the street. Instead of taking the cable car back from Monte, you can slide down in a wicker toboggan along a few thrilling kilometers.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0Nuns&#8217; Valley (Curral das Freiras)<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not far from the capital lies a valley surrounded by steep mountains, where nuns once hid from pirate raids.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dolphin and Whale Watching Cruises<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As in the Azores, from Madeira you can set sail to meet these mammals in their natural habitat.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Viewpoints<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As befits a volcanic island, there are several fascinating viewpoints. The most recommended are Pico do Arieiro, Cabo Gir\u00e3o, Pico Ruivo and Ponte de S\u00e3o Jorge.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Miradouro do Cristo Rei do Garajau<\/strong>: Everyone knows the famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil.<br\/>Well, we found its &#8220;relative&#8221; here in Madeira. The statue stands at the edge of a cliff overlooking an amazing view of sea and nature.
